Hatra
The Sun Temple City
A walled city of the Parthian era that rose from the desert at the crossroads of the Roman and Persian worlds. Hatra's great circular city, ringed by double walls, sheltered the Temple of the Sun and the shrines of its many gods. It survived two Roman sieges, was sacked with the fall of the empire, and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. After its deliberate destruction in 2015, its walls are slowly rising again - a monument to endurance.
